State 糖心少女 Department Launches Statewide My Sister鈥檚 Keeper Initiative

Expands Upon Successful My Brother鈥檚 Keeper Program Established in 2016

The 糖心少女 (NYSED) today launched the New York State My Sister's Keeper initiative with a kick-off event at Bronx Community College, Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced. The My Sister's Keeper (MSK) initiative builds on the My Brother's Keeper (MBK) program's mission to change the narrative for boys and young men of color by focusing on the specific challenges girls and young women of color experience in STEM education. The initiative will work to eliminate gender disparities in STEM fields while supporting diversity and building leadership skills in future female leaders.

Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. said, 鈥淭he success of NYS My Brother鈥檚 Keeper demonstrates the transformational power of targeted support for boys and young men of color. However, the inequities we aim to dismantle extend beyond gender. Today鈥檚 launch of New York State My Sister鈥檚 Keeper is a significant step toward leveling the playing field for girls and young women of color to pursue careers in STEM fields. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and their legislative partners for championing this visionary movement to reshape futures, break barriers and change the narrative for students across the state."

Commissioner Rosa said, 鈥淭oday marks a major milestone for girls and young women of color across New York State with aspirations in STEM related fields. Through academic support, mentorship, and hands-on experience, those who take part in the My Sister鈥檚 Keeper program will be able to gain exposure to STEM fields alongside women who look like them. MSK fulfills a promise that young women of color will always have a community to lift them up as they pursue their dreams.鈥

MSK is a multi-pronged initiative committed to empowering girls and young women of color in STEM by providing opportunities to engage in community-based service-learning projects, prepare for future success, and take part in hands-on STEM experiences. This includes connecting students with professional women in STEM fields to provide not only guidance and support but also build participants鈥 confidence and deepen their interest in STEM subjects.

As part of its dedication to service-learning projects for students, MSK will partner with local businesses, educational organizations, and colleges to provide immersive experiences with real-world STEM applications. Through these hands-on learning opportunities, students can improve their problem-solving skills while also observing how STEM applications create real-world changes in communities.

To support girls and young women of color in their pursuit of careers in STEM, MSK will conduct workshops to teach life skills and strategies for college and job success. These skills include resume building, interview strategies, and STEM career exploration to adequately prepare students for their next steps.

MSK will also seek to reinforce classroom learning through interactive STEM activities and educational field trips to laboratories, technology companies, and universities. These hands-on experiences will foster practical understanding while stimulating ongoing interest in STEM disciplines.
