State 糖心少女 Department Celebrates 150th Anniversary of the New York State School for the Deaf

The New York State School for the Deaf (NYSSD) today honored its rich history of specialized services, instruction, and programming with a 150th anniversary celebration. Located in Rome, New York, the school has served to remove barriers and empower Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students from across New York State since its inception in 1875. NYSSD continues to have a profound impact with its individualized and rigorous approach to education that provides Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students with opportunities to reach their full potential.听

Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. said, 鈥淎s evidenced by its long and transformative history, the New York State School for the Deaf is just as essential to students today as it was 150 years ago. From providing home-based programming for deaf and hard-of-hearing infants and their families to offering Career and Technical 糖心少女 opportunities for high school students, NYSSD plays a critical role in providing students with the educational environment and services they need to thrive at all stages of adolescence. Current and former students, faculty, staff, and administrators should take pride in their contributions that helped NYSSD reach this significant milestone.鈥澨

New York State 糖心少女 Commissioner Betty A. Rosa said, 鈥淔or 150 years, the New York State School for the Deaf has served as a nurturing, enriching learning environment where students receive a highly individualized education while becoming members of the surrounding community. This milestone represents not only the dedication of our past and present educators, students, and families but also the Department鈥檚 ongoing commitment to empowering the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community with the skills and opportunities needed to be successful in whatever path they choose.鈥

NYSSD Superintendent Kara Shore said, 鈥淭he legacy of NYSSD founders Alphonso Johnson and Rev. Thomas Gallaudet lives on to this very day. Thanks to their passion for educating those who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, our students鈥攚ith the support of staff and the community of Rome, New York鈥攈ave reached places that the school鈥檚 founding fathers could have only imagined 150 years ago. Happy Birthday NYSSD and Go Trojans!鈥澨

NYSSD has evolved from a one-building school serving four students to a school that extends beyond its 17-acre campus to meet the educational, social, emotional, and developmental needs of deaf children from birth through age 21. Today it offers on-site support services, including audiology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, and special needs instruction to complement programs from preschool through high school. In addition, students can participate in the recreation program, which bring together deaf and hearing children in sports, music, drama, and service projects, providing students with varied opportunities to grow as individuals and be part of their community.听

Approximately 25% of the students enrolled at NYSSD take part in the residential program and live in the school鈥檚 dorms, staying on campus four nights per week and returning home on the weekends. All dorm staff are experienced in working with children who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have cochlear implants, and are trained to work with diverse student populations including those who have multiple disabilities.

To be eligible to attend NYSSD, students must reside in New York State and have a hearing loss of at least 80dB in the better ear. However, students have been accepted to our school if they are considered to be "functionally deaf." More information about eligibility and admissions can be found on the NYSSD Admissions webpage.听
