The Digital Services Unit manages the NYS Library's website, digital tools, and our Digital Collections, which contain over 90,000 scanned and born-digital items from New York State Government Documents to historical items from our Special Collections. The unit assists with selection and prioritization of materials to be digitized, creates and maintains metadata for digital items, and coordinates with other library units to ensure the library’s digital repository reflects policies and procedures.
The Digital Services Unit is seeking an intern to assist with digitization projects of historical library materials. Students will work directly with materials to learn the digitization process in support of digital access and preservation. Students will learn to use large-format imaging equipment, observe preservation assessments, process digital files for long-term storage and retrieval, and create metadata for digitized items to be uploaded to the NYSL's Digital Collections.
Student will gain professional experience in:
Understanding digital preservation standards and following procedures to adhere to those standards.
Using large-format imaging equipment to scan large historical items.
Creating metadata for digital items using the library's catalog and finding aids.
Understanding how to make digital library materials more accessible.
This position is open to matriculated graduate students at the University at Albany. Preference may be given to those who are pursuing a Masters in Library or Information Science.
Student may work up to 25 hours per week during the hours of 8 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
Undergraduate students will be paid $15/hour and graduate students will be paid $18/hour. For all offices located in NYC or Westchester, Suffolk, or Nassau Counties, undergraduate students will be paid $16.00/hour and graduate students will be paid $19.00/hour.Ìý
