Established in 1818, the New York State Library is comprised of two major units: the Research Library and the Division of Library Development.
The Division of Library Development is a unit within the New York State Library and works in conjunction with the state's 72 different library systems to bring high quality library services to all libraries, communities and residents of NY state.Ìý Staff within the Division of Library Development work with librarians, trustees, library system staff, local leaders, and State ÌÇÐÄÉÙÅ® Department staff to solve problems and find new ways of making library services and resources available to their stakeholders and communities.ÌýÌý
Library Development administers more than $130 million in state and federal aid to New York’s libraries and helps libraries take full advantage of federal and private funding programs.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

Internship positions provide a unique opportunity to gain a broad understanding of New York's 7,000 libraries and 72 different library systems.Ìý

This intern will work primarily with statewide Youth Services programs including Summer Reading at New York Libraries, Ready to Read at New York Libraries, and the Transforming Teen Services initiative.Ìý The position will primarily provide support to the State Library Youth Services Program manager, but may also assist other members of the Library Development team with other projects as needed.Ìý
Activities will include but are not limited to: data collection, research, analysis and presentation, website and social media content, use of online systems and PR and communications.Ìý

Professional Development Plan : 

Interns will meet with Division of Library Development staff to learn more about the unit's operations, policies and procedures. Students will also learn about a variety of statewide library programs within Library Development and the Office of Cultural ÌÇÐÄÉÙÅ®.Ìý

Students learn about state and federal programs related to improving library services. Students receive tours, participate in team, unit, Library-wide, OCE and SED staff meetings, attend Regents meetings and other professional meetings as appropriate, to help them better understand the scope of New York State Library statewide services and programs.Ìý

They will also receive training in agency and office procedures, use of SED email and agency software and any online resources needed to carry out their assignments or projects.Ìý

Desired Skills, Abilities, & ÌÇÐÄÉÙÅ®al Background: 

The intern position is open to matriculated graduate students at the University of Albany. Preference may be given to students who are pursuing a Masters in Library or Information Science, and/or those who are interested in working in an information agency environment after graduation.Ìý

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products as well as strong written and oral communication skills are highly desirable. The ideal candidate for this position should also have good organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.Ìý

Schedule/Hours: 

Students in the intern position must be able to work at least 15 hours a week.Ìý

Paid Internship Hourly Rates: 

Undergraduate students will be paid $15/hour and graduate students will be paid $18/hour. For all offices located in NYC or Westchester, Suffolk, or Nassau Counties, undergraduate students will be paid $16.00/hour and graduate students will be paid $19.00/hour.Ìý
